Pay-As-You-Go or Reservation: Compare the Commitment
Use an illustrative utilization exercise to separate active usage, reservation commitments, and regional pricing.

Compare equivalent assumptions
A pay-as-you-go scenario and a reservation scenario must cover the same workload and observation period. State the region, currency, capacity tier, expected active hours, and offer terms. Capacity prices displayed in this tool are reference assumptions. The actual quote can vary by region, agreement, date, and billing arrangement.
An illustrative break-even exercise
Suppose a fictional pay-as-you-go rate is 2 per active hour and a fictional commitment costs 900 for the comparison month. The arithmetic break-even is 900 divided by 2, or 450 active hours, before other charges and offer conditions. At 200 hours the simple pay-as-you-go estimate is 400; at 600 hours it is 1,200. These are invented inputs used to show the method, not actual Fabric prices or a purchasing recommendation.
Include operational reality
Check whether the workload can pause, who resumes it, and what service behavior applies during and after a pause. A reservation discounts eligible usage under its terms; it is not evidence that a particular workload needs that capacity continuously. Do not count a hypothetical pause schedule as a saving until the business can operate with it.
Before committing
Validate demand over a representative period, including peak and quiet intervals. Verify current official reservation eligibility, term length, cancellation or exchange conditions, and billing treatment directly with the provider. Add storage, network, user licensing, and external services to the total comparison. Preserve the calculation inputs and an owner for reviewing actual usage after purchase. If an input is highly uncertain, compare several plausible scenarios rather than presenting one precise number as a guaranteed saving.
